What are the factors driving a two-year debate of the future of the most historically significant landmark in Kansas? “The story of the Shawnee Indian Mission is one of significant historical and cultural significance,” says Justin Antoniotti, KMBC’s GM.
Who should own the Shawnee Indian Mission located in the heart of Kansas’ wealthiest county? Who should control the search for potential graves of indigenous children on the site?
These are the central questions for the latest installment of KMBC’s award-winning documentary series.
Chronicle: Children of the Shawnee Mission debuts tonight, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. on KMBC, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Kansas City.
As the Kansas Legislature considers the future of the Shawnee Indian Mission, Matt Flener, KMBC’s investigative reporter speaks with representatives for the state of Kansas, the city of Fairway and the Shawnee Tribe.
Flener shares the factors driving a two-year debate of the future of the most historically significant landmark in Kansas.
Thomas Johnson, the namesake of Johnson County, founded the Shawnee Indian Mission in 1839 and later turned the site into the Shawnee Manual Labor Boarding School.
The city of Fairway, the state and the Kaw Nation oppose the Shawnee Tribe’s takeover of the site.
“The story of the Shawnee Indian Mission is one of significant historical and cultural significance,” says Justin Antoniotti, KMBC’s GM. “The Chronicle documentary format affords us the time necessary to share all sides of this growing, complex dispute. Children of the Shawnee Mission features storytelling like you’ll see nowhere else in Kansas City.”
“Matt Flener and our KMBC news team have spent two years covering this story,” says Dan O’Donnell, KMBC’s news director. “That investment of time and resources is evident in the final product viewers will see on Tuesday. Chronicle provides viewers unparalleled focus on unique stories from our community.”
