More than a dozen Sinclair-owned TV stations across the country participated in this year’s 34th Souper Bowl of Caring, collecting food and money to donate to local charities fighting food and nutrition insecurity. According to Sinclair, nearly $2 million was raised by the participating stations to combat hunger.
Since its inception in 1990, the Souper Bowl of Caring event has raised more than $193 million across the nation, with over 305,000 unique groups participating. This year’s goal is to surpass the $200 million mark for the event.
The Souper Bowl of Caring is a series of events that takes place in the weeks leading up to the annual league championship game of the National Football League (NFL).
KUTV, the CBS affiliate in Salt Lake City was the first Sinclair station to begin participating 11 years ago, and since then the Souper Bowl has rolled out across many Sinclair stations.
WEAR, Sinclair’s ABC affiliate in Pensacola, Fla., launched its first Souper Bowl of Caring this year.
“We had some modest expectations as we rolled out this new initiative,” says Cory Culleton, WEAR’s GM. “We found a local foundation — The Shawn Esfahani Foundation — to be our primary sponsor and we had our big day-long food drive at the local Walmart right down the street from the station.”
Culleton says Shawn Esfahani from the foundation was so moved by what the station was doing, he told the station he donate $200,000.
WXLV, the Sinclair ABC affiliate in Winston-Salem, N.C., teamed up with Adrian Murrell, a former NFL running back and current president of the Carolina Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association, for Souper Bowl of Caring.
“We hope that by us being a part of it, we can bring some kind of awareness to it,” Murrell says. “Get our constituents in the community, helping out, getting word out to basically donate and give canned goods for families who are in need.”
