Larry Audas, the general manager of two Tegna stations, WFMY, the CBS affiliate in Greensboro/High Point/Winston Salem, N.C., and WZDX, the Fox affiliate in Huntsville, Ala., announced his decision to retire in a staff memo. Here is a slightly edited version of that memo:
Friends,
Broadcasting has been my life, and I am both blessed and grateful.
Half a century is a good run, right? I’m only in my 47th continuous year of broadcasting. It will have to do.
Announcer, producer, reporter, anchor, news director, general manager in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and beyond has been a journey and often joy beyond my eager imagination in 1977.
Our TV family and associates number hundreds now and the stories, strategies and surprises are beyond counting.
I’m leaving my post(s) as President & GM of WFMY News 2 Greensboro and WZDX FOX54 Huntsville. I think they call it retirement.
The thought wrestled with me for months. But off we go to better serve kids, grandkids and the most supportive wife ever, together every step of our nomadic travels.
Thanks to Tegna for an incredible livelihood.
And then there’s you. The folks I work with today are the reason I avoided AARP for so long. Thank you.
Rather than some personal merit, by the literal grace of God have we enjoyed and survived parts of six crazy, exhilarating, exhausting decades of news, challenge and change. My very best wishes and sincere gratitude as you continue to press forward beyond my late April departure.
Audus and his wife Joanne have two adult children. Kara is a doctor in Charlotte. Maria is a head basketball coach in South Carolina. The family enjoys grandchildren, sports, competition and travel, as well as involvement in church and service opportunities.
