For 29 years, WAVY Norfolk, Va., has teamed up with local businesses, nonprofits and churches to collect, clean and distribute winter garmets. This year it gathered more than 16,000 coats, a new record.
Today, more than 16,000 people in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia are bundled up in coats against a windy cold 35 degrees thanks to the WAVY’s 10 On Your Side Coats for Families campaign that collects new and gently used coats for people of all ages. The coldest temperature recorded there was minus 3 degrees back in 1985. WAVY is Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Norfolk.
For 29 years, WAVY has been the only station in the region doing that, teaming up with local businesses, nonprofits, and churches this season to collect, clean and distribute more than 16,000 coats and that’s a new record.
“We are elated that the Hampton Roads community came together to make a lasting difference by donating a record setting number of coats” says Carol Ward, WAVY’s GM. “It is humbling and a testament to the power of 10 On Your Side and the strength of our community partners.”
Taking part by providing dropoff locations were Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, American Mechanical, Casey Auto Group, 1st Advantage Federal Credit Union, Hampton Roads Honda Dealers, Berkshire Hathaway, Thomas Nelson Community College, Batteries Plus Bulbs, Patrick Henry Mall, and Dillard’s at Lynnhaven, along with Red Mill Commons, Marketplace at Hilltop and Albano Cleaners.
Coats for Families is fueled by 10 On Your Side’s long-time partner Albano Cleaners. Even through these difficult times, Albano Cleaners ensures that gently used coats are cleaned and ready for their next owners.
Harrison’s by Apple Moving served as the official pick up partner, making weekly stops to collect donated coats. It also played an integral part in sorting and distributing coats to those in need.
