WHNS Fox Carolina, Gray’s Fox affiliate in Greenville, S.C., has a new promo to support the Fox Carolina First Alert Weather App launched a couple of months ago.
Rob Thomas, WHNS’ creative services director says his team wanted to produce it in a way that other Gray stations could customize it in their market.
The 30-second promo has only three shots. “Hopefully, that simplicity helps with its effectiveness,” Thomas says.
The promo highlights one of the best features of the Fox Carolina First Alert Weather App — the ability to watch WHNS’ live storm coverage on the app.
“We wanted to illustrate that in a simple, easy-to-understand message, but also make it powerful,” Thomas says.
Thomas says the spot needed a steady videography hand with gimbal experience and, fortunately, he has a producer with those skills, Steven Reeps.
Reeps coached the actors well, a family who were friends of Kendra Kent, WHNS’ chief meteorologist.
“Not actors, just regular folks,” Thomas says.
The audio of Kent in the promo was pulled from clips of her during live coverage of severe weather in the spring.
“The more authentic, the better,” Thomas says.
“With some audio effects help from Adobe Premiere, we think we captured the feeling of being inside portions of the house,” he says.
