One of the essential services TV stations make in their community is broadcasting debates between candidates for office.

Voters have a chance to see and hear the candidates in action, discussing their stands on the issues and what they intend to do once elected to office.

WAPT, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Jackson, Miss., is airing a live, hour-long, commercial-free debate between incumbent Gov. Tate Reeves and Democratic nominee Brandon Presley on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. CT.

The debate will be simulcast statewide through a partnership with Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The debate will also be streamed live on WAPT.com and the 16 WAPT News app.

Peter Keith

“As a local news station, we are built on the foundation of empowering voters with firsthand information,” says Peter Keith, WAPT’s GM. “We appreciate the readiness of both Governor Reeves and Mr. Presley in making themselves available in this crucial debate. Their move points to a healthy democracy where voters hear directly from the candidates. This is not just about making a choice but informed decision-making at the ballot.”

Viewers are invited to submit questions for the candidates by emailing [email protected], submitting via the “news tip” function of the 16 WAPT News app, or direct messaging 16 WAPT on Facebook.

According to the station, more than 100 questions have already been submitted.

Mississippi’s general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
