It can get cold in Virginia. In 1985, temperatures dropped to a record-breaking -30°F in Mountain Lake. In the Hampton Roads area, the lowest temperature recorded was -3°F.
It may not get that cold this winter, but as temperatures begin to drop, thousands of Hampton Roads residents will struggle to stay warm.
That’s why WAVY, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate serving the Hampton Roads-Norfolk-Portsmouth DMA, is continuing its 30-year tradition of collecting new and like-new coats for people in need of all ages and sizes.
WAVY says it is “proud to continues its mission of helping those in need through our 10 On Your Side Coats for Families drive. For many families, a warm coat is not just a piece of clothing; it represents security, protection, and the knowledge that their community cares.”
“By supporting this initiative, you’re not only donating a coat, but you’re also providing a lifeline against the cold, especially for children, seniors, and vulnerable individuals,” says Carol Ward, WAVY’s GM. “The dedication and generosity from everyone involved make Coats for Families possible.”
From now until Dec. 31, donations of new and like-new coats will be accepted at select Walmart locations, Grand Furniture locations, Hampton Roads Honda dealers, Casey Auto Group dealerships, First Advantage Federal Credit Unions, Patrick Henry Mall, Hilltop Marketplace and Red Mill Commons.
Additional sponsors helping spread the message this year include West Shore Home and McDonald’s of Hampton Roads & Northeast North Carolina.
Coats for Families is fueled by the warm hearts of 10 On Your Side’s long-time partners, Albano Cleaners and Harrison’s by Apple Moving. Each week, Harrison’s collects coats from 10 On Your Side collection sponsors while Albano Cleaners ensures that any gently used coats are cleaned.
