The lowest temperature ever recorded in Viginia was 30 below zero at Mountain Lake in 1985. And 35 years ago, WAVY, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Portsmouth, Va., started its annual Coats for Families drive.
Through a combination of station promotions and live news coverage during the most recent drive in November and December of 2023, more than 8,000 coats were donated and are now being distributed.
WAVY says that by working with local businesses, nonprofits, churches and viewers, it remains the only local station in the region dedicated to collecting and distributing new and gently used coats.
“We are truly humbled and grateful for the incredible support we received from the community during this year’s Coats for Families drive,” says Carol Ward, WAVY’s general manager. “The overwhelming number of coats donated reflects the caring spirit of our community, and we are thrilled to be part of an initiative that directly impacts the lives of those in need.”
Harrison’s by Apple Moving served as the official pickup partner, making weekly stops to collect donated coats. It also played an integral part in sorting coats for those in need.
Coats for Families is fueled by the warm hearts of 10 On Your Side’s long-time partner Albano Cleaners. Even through difficult times, Albano Cleaners ensures that gently used coats are cleaned and ready for their next owner.
Casey Auto Group, 1st Advantage Federal Credit Union, Hampton Roads Honda Dealers, Grand Furniture, West Shore Home, McDonalds of Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina, Patrick Henry Mall, along with Walmart, Red Mill Commons, Marketplace at Hilltop and Albano Cleaners took part in the incredible initiative serving as drop off locations for coats.
