“I’ve dreamed of working at 5NEWS since I was a young kid,” Covert says. “This station has played a huge role in my life over the years, and I’m honored to now be a part of its legacy. I can’t wait to come home and track storms where my passion for weather began.”
Skot Covert makes a move within Tegna and Arkansas to KFSM, 5News, the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, from KTHV, the CBS affil in Little Rock.
Covert is a lifelong Arkansan who grew up in Ozark. From an early age, he was fascinated by weather. Anytime storms rolled in, he was glued to 5News severe weather coverage and also job shadowed at 5NEWS during high school and college.
“I’ve dreamed of working at 5NEWS since I was a young kid,” Covert says. “This station has played a huge role in my life over the years, and I’m honored to now be a part of its legacy. I can’t wait to come home and track storms where my passion for weather began.”
Covert has won three Emmy Awards for his reporting on Arkansas climate issues. As an FAA licensed drone pilot, he can’t wait to capture the beauty of our area from SKY5.
“Skot’s skill and passion for weather coverage is contagious, as is his love of this area,” says Van Comer, 5NEWS GM. “He understands the importance of giving back and demonstrates a selfless commitment to community service. Skot is the ideal addition to an already strong 5NEWS team.”
Covert is a proud graduate of Arkansas Tech University and Mississippi State University. Prior to joining Tegna, he provided remote weather forecasts for various locations around the United States and even had the rare opportunity to fly directly into the eye of Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 storm, in 2019.
Covert and his family of Golden Retrievers will relocate to Northwest Arkansas in April. His first appearance on 5NEWS is scheduled for Monday, April 29.
