The holidays for those who work and watch Action News on WPVI, the ABC O&O here in Philadelphia, are a little less bright this year due to the crash of its iconic helicopter, Chopper 6, which killed the pilot and a photographer on Tuesday.
The pilot was 67-year-old Monroe Smith of Glenside, Pa. and the photographer was 45-year-old Christopher Dougherty of Oreland, Pa.
They have a long history with the station, with Smith being a part of the Action News team through U.S. Helicopters for over 20 years and Dougherty for 18 years.
So when Mike Monsell, WPVI’s creative services director, sent me this compilation of Happy Holidays promos yesterday, I felt I had to share them.
I’m sure these were produced long before the crash and you have to forgive Monsell for the late entry, given the situation.
Many years ago, I was part of a production crew that spent the day shooing video of Chopper 6 everywhere, from the city to Harrisburg, from there to Atlantic City and down the coast to Cape May then up over the Delaware Bay back to the city. It was literally all day sitting with pilot in Chopper 6 while a camera crew in another helicopter filmed Chopper 6 along the way. I loved every minute of it.
My heart goes out to the Dougherty and Smith and their families and all of their co-workers at Action News.
