Maria Toorpakai is one of Pakistan’s top female squash players.
At a young age, she disguised herself as a boy so she could play.
That brought death threats from the Taliban.
“Playing sports is an extreme act,” said Toorpakai.
“A woman cannot walk without a shawl, cannot walk without a man beside her. Women are so scared to say anything or show their emotions, because they know they’re going to get killed.”
Tonight at 10, The War to Be Her, a documentary from POV, makes its broadcast premiere on PBS.
Here’s a promo from KCTS, the PBS station in Seattle.

The War to Be Her, told from Toorpakai’s point of view, follows the young woman’s precarious—and sometimes dangerous—life in Waziristan.
POV is American television’s longest-running documentary series now in its 31st season.
