In October 2018, just after midnight in a small Wisconsin town, a man forced his way into a family’s home, murdered the father and mother and took a 13-year old girl. Both vanished without a trace. That’s the basis of a new true crime podcast launched by KARE, Tegna’s NBC affiliate in Minneapolis.
A trip to WNYW’s Tape Room, where the station keeps its archives, sparked an idea for reporter Dan Bowens. In the Tape Room, Bowens found old reports of crimes from the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area that have remained unsolved to this day. Bowens has produced 13 audio-only podcasts so far. Of those, four were made into TV stories and then those four were stitched together for a 22-minute special called The Tape Room.
Zak Rosen, Graham Media’s podcast director, said the podcasts use archival content already generated by WDIV’s TV news coverage of the stories, updated and enlarged with new interviews.
WJXT, Graham Media’s independent station in Jacksonville, Fla., hopes a series of special reports and podcasts will generate new leads. The television special reports are about 3 minutes, and the podcasts, more in-depth, run about 22 minutes.
