KAUZ, American Spirit’s CBS affiliate in Wichita Falls, Texas, is running a promo for the station’s weather app that appeals to all those who don’t like cutting the grass.
Let’s face it, most people think of mowing their lawns as drudgery. Only commercials for lawn mowers and grass fertilizers can make lawn mowing look like a religious experience.
So according to KAUZ’s new promo, using its new weather app can give you a legitimate excuse to forgo cutting the grass.
Rob Thomas, KAUZ’s marketing manager, says the idea for the spot was personal. “Mowing the yard is not something I look forward to,” he says.
“It seems like the lawn is growing so fast that within two or three days of mowing, I’m right back where I started. So I guess I’m at the point of looking for excuses to procrastinate.”
Thomas says he put his feelings down on paper and came up with a script.
“It took me a while to find the right person to pull off the acting. Then I realized our digital guru, Tyler Boydston, was perfect,” Thomas says.
“We shot one afternoon (yes that’s my house and hairy lawn) and I edited that night.”
Thomas says he set out to produce it in a way that other stations might easily customize it for their markets, and so far, a handful have plans to do just that.
