Christian Mengel, the creative services director at KDRV, the ABC affiliate in Medford, Oregon, wants to know what’s happening in your creative services shop. “I’d love to continue reading and seeing things that are happening within creative/marketing departments.”
To celebrate the new year, I wrote a column asking you to tell me what’s new, how can I better serve you, what topics should I cover, etc.
It was a milestone article, the 2,000th since Market Share went to a daily format about five years ago.
That prompted an email from Christian Mengel, the creative services director at KDRV, Heartland Media’s ABC affiliate in Medford, Ore.
Here’s what he had to say:
I’d like to read and see more stories on the inside of various creative services or marketing departments.
I imagine that the majority of Market Share readers are in some kind of a creative/marketing management position, and frequently read up on things that can help them grow and improve within their own departments at their own place of work (that’s why I read Market Share).
Even though they are simple, I like reading about new hires, or someone who tries a new piece of equipment, or someone who takes some risks to help improve the chemistry and culture of their departments.
To this day, my favorite story is of the station that used funko-pop vinyl figures of CW superheroes to promote their shows. The time-lapse video of them constructing their set was really cool to see.

My second-place story is probably seeing the new CSD at WDAF in Kansas City make some aesthetic changes and upgrades to their office. It was an interesting story that you’d otherwise need a physical tour to see and appreciate it.
(NOTE: Since TVNewsCheck went to a new, secure, redesigned website, some older articles do not have pictures or videos. Fortunately, this is one without the pictures which is a shame. But here are a few pictures from that article.)
So again, I’d love to continue reading and seeing things that are happening within creative/marketing departments.
Keep up the great work! — Christian Mengel
NOTE: Send me pictures of your place, your staff, your setting. Ask your people to write me about the challenges of their jobs. Whatever you can share is appreciated.
