“We recognize that part of our role as a locally owned and operated television station is to support and help neighbors and businesses in need,” said Joel Davis, WRAL-TV’s general manager.
WRAL, Capitol Broadcasting’s NBC affiliate in Raleigh, N.C., held an all-day virtual fundraiser last Thursday, March 26, to support local restaurants.
Joining WRAL were other Capitol broadcasting properties WRAZ, Raleigh’s Fox affiliate; WRAL.com; WRAL-FM; WCMC-FM; and WBEN-FM.
Together, the group’s one-day effort raised more than $275,000 to provide immediate help to restaurant and hotel workers affected by pandemic-related layoffs.
“We recognize that part of our role as a locally owned and operated television station is to support and help neighbors and businesses in need,” said Joel Davis, WRAL general manager.
In addition to airing news stories all day about the struggles of the local restaurant community, WRAL’s digital team created a database of local restaurants that have service of some kind.
Plus, WRAL’s production team created free spots to highlight those businesses.
“Within a matter of days, we have seen the majority of workers in the hospitality industry laid off, furloughed or completely sidelined,” said Steve Thanhauser, chairman of the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.
“While we are all facing an uncertain financial future, these workers are living a harsh new reality immediately. It’s our duty to show them how much we value their work and well being by doing what we can to help them out.”
