Since its founding in 1977, House of Ruth Maryland has helped more than 100,000 victims through its shelter, 24-hour hotline, counseling, outreach, training and legal services. As a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Scripps-owned ABC affiliate WMAR Baltimore partnered with House of Ruth Maryland for the Fill The House campaign on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
WMAR, House of Ruth Maryland, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Manor Care and PeoplesBank collected donations for House of Ruth Maryland at White Marsh Mall.
House of Ruth Maryland leads the fight to end intimate partner violence against women and their children by confronting attitudes, behaviors and systems that perpetuate it, and by providing victims with the services necessary to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear.

WMAR broadcast the collection efforts with live cut-ins throughout the day, and WJZ-FM (105.7 The Fan) helped drive traffic to the event through on-air mentions and PSAs.
Community members donated diapers and wipes, new women’s and children’s underwear and twin-size comforters, sheets and pillows.
The effort loaded a truck donated by Von Paris Moving & Storage.
Prior to the on-site donations on Oct. 17, thanks to the Scripps Howard Foundation, WMAR matched all monetary donations made to House of Ruth Maryland up to $10,000.
Bill Hooper, WMAR’s general manager, presented a $20,000 check at the event to House of Ruth Maryland.
