WCIA, the CBS affiliate in Champaign, Illinois, has been able to digitize 1580 hours of old news stories from their news archives. From that footage, the station has created a segment called, From the Vault, which airs on WCIA’s newscasts and its afternoon lifestyle show, CI Living.
Peter Barrett, the production manager at WCIA, Nexstar’s CBS affiliate in Champaign, Ill., responded to a recent Market Share column about how another TV station was preserving and digitizing news footage from the station’s archives.
“I’ve been doing the same thing with WCIA’s footage for the past three years, created a show, From the Vault, and a weekly news feature showing stories from the past going back into the ’50s.”
Barrett was able to transfer 16 mm footage to a digital movie file, and has been digitizing that along with 3,700 hour-long 3/4-inch tapes, Beta SP, and DVC tapes from 1975 to 2003.
Barrett said he’ll also be sharing thousands of high resolution pictures from the archives on social media soon.
