Scripps-owned ABC affiliate WMAR devoted an entire day last week to encourage Baltimore residents to donate money and other items to the women and children who sought shelter in the House of Ruth Maryland.
The House of Ruth Maryland is a shelter that leads the fight to end intimate partner violence against women and their children by providing victims with the services necessary to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear.
Since its founding in 1977, House of Ruth Maryland has helped more than 100,000 victims through its shelter, 24-hour hotline, counseling, out-reach, training and legal services.
The Fill The House campaign collected donations for House of Ruth Maryland at White Marsh Mall.
WMAR broadcast the collection efforts with live cut-ins throughout the day.
Prior to the on-site donations on Dec. 20, thanks to the Scripps Howard Foundation, WMAR matched all monetary donations made to House of Ruth Maryland up to $10,000.
In addition, WMAR presented the House of Ruth Maryland with 595 backpacks (the amount of families served last year by the shelter) filled with teddy bears and books.
When children enter the shelter throughout the year, they will have the opportunity to choose their own backpack, teddy bear and book, empowering them to make decisions during a time in which they do not have control of their lives.
Residents donated diapers and wipes, new women’s and children’s underwear and twin-size comforters, sheets and pillows. The effort loaded a truck donated by Von Paris Moving & Storage.
“This tremendous outpouring of support from the Baltimore community not only benefits the operations of the shelter,” said Bill Hooper, WMAR’s general manager, “but gives us the opportunity to elevate the conversation around abuse. This is our first step in helping achieve better awareness and support for victims and their families”.
“We truly appreciate the support from WMAR this holiday season,” said Sandi Timmins, executive director of House of Ruth Maryland.
“As we recognize our 40th anniversary, we are committed to continuing our work within our community, providing services and resources to victims of intimate partner violence.”
The donations will help those in need at House of Ruth Maryland, helping to provide a sense of comfort to those seeking help in House of Ruth Maryland’s shelter.
