WCIU Superhero Campaign Generates Lots Of ‘Soles’

Not a misspelling, ‘soles’ as in gym shoes.  The month-long campaign encouraged Chicago residents across the city and suburbs to donate gently worn or new gym shoes to distribute to those in need by their community partner, Share Your Souls.

WCIU, Weigel Broadcasting’s CW acffiliate in Chicago, launched the Be A Superhero, Share Your Soles campaign, to collect and distribute gently worn or new gym shoes to those in need by their community partner, Share Your Soles.

Mona Purdy

“We have never received shoes this way before, it was an amazing success,” said Mona Purdy, Share Your Soles’ founder. “Many families will benefit from these donations and in fact, some of the shoes in the first donation drop-off provided to us went to the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. We are definitely grateful for the contribution.”

WCIU partnered with Fitness Formula Clubs to act as the drop-off sites.

The month-long campaign encouraged Chicago residents across the city and suburbs to donate shoes at any of the 11 Fitness Formula Clubs.

“We began pre-promotion on Wednesday, Sept. 11, to build awareness driven by on-air spots, online, social media support from CW26, FFC and Share Your Souls as well as on-site point of purchase displays and posters at all FFC locations,” said Molly Kelly, Weigel’s media strategy director.

“By Friday, Sept. 13, donations were already rolling in to the 11 FFC collection sites located across the city and suburbs. We had such great response we had to pick up the donated sneakers several times throughout the month.

“Our first delivery of more than 300 shoes in the first weeks of the campaign were sent to the Bahamas as part of Hurricane Dorian relief. The final result was more the 3,000 pairs of shoes collected that will now be redistributed to those in need by our community partner, Share Your Souls. We are thrilled with the end result and impressed with the continued generosity of Chicago.”
