“Being Jaylin’s Big Brother is one of the best things that could have happened in my life,” said Matt Barnes. “Watching him mature into the man he is today and being able to be just a small part of his journey has been amazing. I just hope our experience inspires others to get involved with the organization and make a difference in someone’s life”
Matt Barnes, morning co-anchor at WCMH, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Columbus, Ohio (DMA 34), was named 2020 Big Brother of the Year by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
Barnes has participated in this mentoring program since March of 2016 when he met his little brother, Jaylin Woods.
Big Brother Matt remembers that when he first met Jaylin, the entire family was there, too. They wanted Matt to know just how important Jaylin was in their lives.
Jaylin graduated this year from Fort Hayes High School and has an interest in automotive technology. The future entrepreneur wants to open his own automotive shop, focusing on electric cars.
“Being Jaylin’s Big Brother is one of the best things that could have happened in my life,” said Barnes.
“Watching him mature into the man he is today and being able to be just a small part of his journey has been amazing. I just hope our experience inspires others to get involved with the organization and make a difference in someone’s life”
“Speaking for all of us at NBC4, we’re so proud of Matt for this prestigious recognition,” said Ken Freedman, WCMH’s general manager.
“We who work with Matt every day are blessed to see the energy and passion he brings to whatever he sets his mind to. Matt is a leader and the way he represents our community and NBC4 sets an example for us all to emulate.”
“Matt is a person whose positive outlook is contagious, he is an uplifting force in our newsroom,” said Denise Eck, WCMH’s news director.
“We are so proud of Matt for this honor and his great work in the community with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
