“With so many schools canceled and families looking for way to keep their students engaged we were proud to offer this learning opportunity to our community,” said Ike Walker, KVLY’s general manager.
It’s 2 o’clock in Fargo, do you know where your kids are?
Probably watching Hutch Johnson, KVLY’s Chief Meteorologist, giving a weather class on Facebook Live. KVLY, Valley News Live, is Gray’s NBC affiliate in Fargo, N.D. (DMA 116).
And according to data supplied by the station, thousands of people, kids and parents, are streaming the online weather classes.
“With so many schools canceled and families looking for way to keep their students engaged we were proud to offer this learning opportunity to our community,” said Ike Walker, KVLY’s general manager.
“Hutch is a scientist that knows how to make learning fun and he really enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for weather with students across North Dakota and Minnesota.”
“Kids and friends shared photos of themselves watching Hutch online, their homemade artwork, and some felt inspired to comment on their own hobbies,” said Wendy Bernier, KVLY’s marketing director.
Bernier continued: “This was a great place for parents to engage their kids as they, very quickly, had to figure out homeschooling and keep kids busy at home, while they themselves had to transition from their jobs to home offices. On-air promotion was produced, digital spread across the website, the news app, and the weather app. Feedback was immediate and positive.
“Another great aspect was that the client that sponsored the weekly ‘Weather Kid’ on-air segment was seamlessly transitioned over to this Facebook live classroom idea. This was still a way to show local kids that they are an important asset to the our community, and support parents and teachers.”
The next classes are scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, and Thursday, April 9, on the Valley News Live Facebook page.
