Randy Thurman, creative services director at KHSB in Kansas City, sent along some promos for the Kansas City Chiefs which feature a well-known Hollywood actor. Seems the actor is a big fan of the Chiefs and happened to be in town. “I guess the point of it all is never be afraid to ask anyone, even a Hollywood actor, to do something – they might actually say yes,” said Thurman.
It’s not every day you get the chance to recruit a well-known Hollywood movie star to do some local promos for your station.
But Randy Thurman seized the opportunity and all he had to do was ask.
Thurman is the creative services director for KSHB, the Scripps NBC affiliate in Kansas City, where the Kansas City Chiefs play.
Here’s Thurman account of how it all came together.
“The Chiefs are the talk of the NFL this year. But as an NBC affiliate we do not have the ability to broadcast many Chiefs games — only those that are part of NBC’s Sunday Night package. So when we get the opportunity we like to produce content that hopefully cuts through the promo clutter.”
Turns out actor David Koechner is from a small town not far from K.C. and is a big Chiefs fan.
If you don’t know who David Koechner is, here’s a scene with him in the movie, Anchorman.
Koechner was scheduled to do an appearance on KSHB’s local lifestyle show to promote a stand-up appearance.
“Knowing he was a big Chiefs fan,” said Thurman, “I asked members of our team to ask him if he would cut a few wild lines after his appearance on our show. Much to my surprise he agreed to do it, he even really got into it. I guess the point of it all is never be afraid to ask anyone, even a Hollywood actor, to do something – they might actually say yes.”
