“Planning for this anniversary began last year and every department inside the station has worked diligently to make sure we showcased how it all began, looked to the future and most importantly, thanked our loyal viewers,” said Jason Doyle, WDTN’s creative services director.
WDTN, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Dayton, Ohio, is celebrating 70 years of broadcasting.
Jason Doyle, WDTN’s creative services director, said it all began on March 15, 1949, when then, WLW-D began broadcasting.
“Planning for this anniversary began last year and every department inside the station has worked diligently to make sure we showcased how it all began, looked to the future and most importantly, thanked our loyal viewers.”
Doyle said the station is still in the same building that was built in the 1940s and in the same studio where The Phil Donahue Show began.
“We even still have, and use, his studio audience chairs,” said Doyle.
As part of the celebration, the station produced nearly 20 news vignettes that showcased some of the bigger stories and events over the years.

“On the site you can find all the shout outs, news vignettes and a ton of old promos that people love to watch,” said Doyle.
Old promos? I love to watch.
NOTE: In my humble opinion, it’s entirely legitimate for any TV station to celebrate a milestone like 70 years on the air. It reminds viewers of the station’s contributions through the years, gives them a chance to see the familiar faces that brought them the news during their lives. Owners of stations may come and go, but amid any and all changes over the years, the legacy of local TV is to be celebrated for its permanence.
