KGAN, Sinclair’s CBS affiliate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, earned four awards from the Iowa Broadcast News Association at the association’s annual awards banquet on April 18.
KGAN, Iowa’s News Now, earned first place in the Spot News category for large market TV stations for its breaking news, day-of coverage of the Aug. 10, 2020 derecho.
Meteorologist Nick Stewart brought viewers the first video from the mobile Road Warrior weather station before the leading edge of the storm arrived. Even as the storm was damaging the KGAN CBS2 building, Meteorologists Rebecca Kopelman and Sara Flynn tracked the storm live on-air with continuous coverage.
Immediately following the storm, all members of the Iowa’s News Now News team fanned out across the community to give viewers the first look at the immensity of the destruction. Despite blocked roads, downed electrical grid and gaps in communications, Iowa’s News Now provided multi-platform coverage throughout the rest of the day.
