WVTM, Hearst’s NBC affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama, teamed up with the American Red Cross for a one-day telethon on Tuesday, March 30 that raised $132,450 to help victims impacted by natural disasters.

“Central Alabama has experienced a one-two punch the last few weeks with tornadoes and severe weather,” says Susana Schuler, WVTM’s GM.

“But Alabamians are a generous group and as our neighbors mourn, rebuild and recover these funds will help those impacted by tornadoes and other natural disasters. We truly want to thank our audience and corporate partners for their generosity.”

Representatives from Regions, MAPCO and Wells Fargo made special donations to the American Red Cross during newscast via Zoom interviews.

“We are devastated by the loss of life and destruction left behind by the numerous tornadoes that swept through our state,” says Annette Rowland, communications director of the American Red Cross Alabama and Mississippi Region.

“Although we are familiar with disasters, it’s heartbreaking to see your neighbors hurting after a disaster. The Red Cross has been on the ground providing critical, emergency support to those devastated by tornadoes and will continue until we are no longer needed. Because of your generosity, we’re able to respond to the needs of disaster survivors at a moment’s notice and continue to support our community during this difficult time.”
