Rob Thomas serves as the creative services and marketing director for two stations separated by 50 miles and the Oklahoma and Texas state lines — KSWO, Gray’s ABC affiliate in Lawton, Okla., and KAUZ, the CBS affiliate in Wichita Falls, Texas, owned American Spirit.

So when a tornado touched down in the area, th two pooled their resources for the benefit of viewers in both locations.

“We share resources and the First Alert Weather brand,” says Thomas, “an arrangement that benefits both in times like this.”

Although the tornadoes thankfully weren’t bad ones from destruction or injury/death perspectives, says Thomas, “they could have been and we wanted to show people that we’re going to do whatever it takes to help them see the threat, more than anyone else in this area.”

Thomas says the stations use each other’s tower cams, storm tracker vehicle, and even occasionally share meteorologists.

“With one team and resources on the Oklahoma side of the market and another team and resources on the Texas side, it really helps us give a complete picture no matter where you live.”

Thomas says the marketing goals for each station are a little different, but “ultimately we both want to win weather, and I think we do, particularly in severe weather.”
