Every year for the past 23 years, Steve Weagle, chief meteorologist at WPTV, the Scripps NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach, Fla., spends five days on a bike riding down the coast of Florida to raise awareness for hurricane preparedness as well as money for the American Red Cross.

This year’s ride was virtual and featured live looks from different locations around the community.

Steve’s Ride for the Red Cross was held the last week of May.

More than $85,000 was raised during the five-day virtual ride. Money collected benefits the American Red Cross of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

WPTV brought awareness to the campaign before, during and after the ride with on-air promos and social posts, plus stories and live shots within newscasts.

Lloyd Bucher

“What can be said about Steve Weagle’s ambitious bike ride that hasn’t already been said?” asks Lloyd Bucher, WPTV’s GM. “Given the challenges our community has faced since Steve’s last ride, we felt the need for donations to the American Red Cross is as important as ever.

“While the market groans collectively as we enter Hurricane season, Steve’s virtual bike ride also performed the task of bringing awareness to the beginning of the season. Our mission at WPTV is to keep our viewers informed, safe and involved in the community; and Steve Weagle has done just that with his 23rd consecutive annual ride.”
