Check out this weather promo that started when Deilia Williams, KHOU’s marketing director, asked her team for off the wall ideas.
KHOU, Tegna’s CBS affiliate in Houston, has a new weather promo featuring David Paul, the station’s chief meteorologist, that demonstrates “some very awesome creative.”
So says Lauren Ridgley, the CEO of Left Hand Agency, a “brand-loving, story-telling, growth-focused full-service advertising agency” according to its website.

And Ridgley should know a good promo when she sees one, having spent 13 years as a producer, promo manager and CSD in local TV before heading up Left Hand Agency.
Ridgley, a friend of Deilia Williams, the marketing director at KHOU, sent me a note alerting me to the promo.
“It’s very hard to break new ground with TV promotion these days,” Ridgley writes, “and I found this spot so refreshing, clever and memorable. Authenticity is the holy grail of advertising and I think this is so spot on.”
And when an ad agency CEO reaps praise on a weather promo, you follow up on it.

Williams says you should never be afraid to ask for “off the wall” ideas from your creative team. During a brainstorming session about chief meteorologist David Paul, and his extraordinary ability to explain weather and science, Williams asked for something different.
Turns out Paul has an affinity for bees.
Williams says one of her team wondered what bees do in a hurricane, “and that’s how the creative was born. So, never BEE afraid to venture out from the ordinary because honey, you never know what can happen when you do.”
KAKE, Lockwood Broadcasting’s ABC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas, is looking for a Creative Services Director, a Meteorologist, and a Multi-Media Journalist. Click here for more specifics and how to apply to each opening.
