I’ve created a monster. Namely, writing about TV stations that won the various regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.
I have already shared dozens. But I can’t share all of them.
I do like to spotlight award-winning work, whether it’s news promotion or news coverage examples, as I believe looking at work deemed excellent by a jury of our peers helps everyone improve their craft.
So I decided that I would honor the announcements I received as of Friday night, and that would be it until the nationals are announced.
There were 785 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in 16 categories this year which recognize more than 307 local radio, television and digital news organizations across the country and internationally.

So here are nine stations that sent me a presser last week about their awards in no particular order.
WIAT, the CBS affiliate in Birmingham owned by Nexstar, earned regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.
WIAT, Best Breaking News Coverage
The recognition for the best breaking news award was for the CBS 42 News and Weather team coverage of a damaging tornado in Fairfield, Alabama. The station devoted hours of sustaining coverage with a team of anchors and reporters broadcasting live from the scene of the hardest hit areas.
WIAT, Best News Documentary
The Local War on Cancer, a half-hour special showcased the cutting-edge technology to fight cancer developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
WCAU, the NBC O&O in Philadelphia, earned five five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.
WCAU, Continuing Coverage
WCAU’s investigative report on the downfall of former Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams.
WCAU, News Documentary
WCAU’s digital exclusive, Preventing Suicide: Breaking the Silence, took an in-depth look at suicide in the Greater Philadelphia region to raise awareness, remove the stigma, grow mental health literacy and shine a light on the role that local government and health organizations are taking to address this critical issue.

WXYZ, the Scripps-owned ABC affiliate in Detroit, earned two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.
WXYZ, Investigative Reporting
Problems in Probate reported was a yearlong investigation that prompted an FBI raid, a sheriff’s department criminal probe, the termination of public officials and changed Michigan law.
WXYZ, Continuing Coverage
The Protected Predator documented Michigan State University’s slow response to victims of child molester Larry Nassar. The reports, spanning more than a year, chronicled the stories of abuse long before they became national news.

Auto Auction Crash
A typical morning at the Lynnway Auto Auction in Billerica quickly turned into chaos when one of the vehicles up for sale suddenly accelerated, striking several people and smashing through the brick wall of the building. WCVB was on air within minutes of the crash with the early reports of injuries and a witness account of what took place

Methuen Plane Crash
The initial reports that came in were for a plane crash near the Lawrence airport, and WCVB’s newsroom quickly learned that the small plane had gone down short of the runway, crashing into the roof of a nearby condo complex. As witnesses helped our teams on the ground piece together what took place, our investigative team got to work to learn the history of the plane, details on the unnamed pilot and what occurred in the final moments of the flight

State of Addiction
For more than two years, WCVB has been focused on the opioid crisis playing out in our region and across the country. WCVB has produced more than 150 stories in regular newscasts and other campaigns to draw attention to the challenges of addiction. On June 13, 2017, WCVB turned to primetime to provide a progress report on the crisis in a one-hour show at 10 p.m. titled, “5 On: State of Addiction.”

Recognizing NBC Bay Area for keeping their viewers informed through social media during the devastating wildfires that broke across several counties of the North Bay in October of 2017 that killed 44 people, burned tens of thousands of acres and destroyed 8,400 homes and businesses.

Inside Antifa revealed a unique insight into Antifa, the movement that uses violence to fight fascism. The NBC Bay Area Investigative unit spent months cultivating relationships with members of the anti-fascist group during the rise of violent protests and clashes that rippled across the nation.

Kicked Out, an investigation exposed how hundreds of San Francisco residents may have been wrongfully evicted from their homes. The series of reports prompted government hearings, new laws, and one of the city’s largest housing reform efforts in recent history.
